888 888 88: Is this the luckiest phone number?

The luckiest phone number in China?

In 2003 a Chinese Airline paid $280,000 for the telephone nuber: 8888 8888 at a special auction in the south-western Chinese province of Sichuan.

Many people in China regard the number 8 to be lucky, because it is pronounced in a similar way to the Mandarin and Cantonese words for getting rich.

So an number containing the number 8 (eight times) is thought to be especially lucky.

The airline company is planning to use the number for a 24-hour customer service hot line.

The number is also easy to remember, of course

The local government generated a sum of 7.13 million yuan through the auction.

888 Licence Plate Sells for $30,000

In April 2006, a car license plate: APC 888 was auctioned off for 237,000 yuan ( approximately US$30,000) in Guangzhou, close to Hong Kong, in Southern China.

Rich owners of Mercedes, Jaguars and other luxury cars, made bids for the "lucky 8s" which were among 300 lucky numbers plates auctioned.

A lady won the auction after more than 20 rounds of bidding.

8 is an auspicious number in China, because it sounds like "Good Fortune". 888 is even more lucky and it was this that drove up the price of the bids.

Guangzhou has plans to auction 2,700 lucky numbers: all the revenue will be given to the city's fund to help victims of road accidents.

888 is a Lucky Number at the Beijing Olympics

Lucky number at Beijing Olympics

The 2008 Beijing Olympics will start at 8 o'clock in the evening on the 8th August, in keeping with 888 as an extremely lucky number (at 8 on the 8th of the 8th month).

888 has a similar pronounciation in Cantonese as the word for to make money.
Although the Olympic Games had been planned to start in late August because of Beijing's high summer temperatures, Beijing's mayor decided that the event would begin on the luckiest date possible - on 8/8/08.

6, 8and 9 are considered lucky numbers in Chinese, while 4, 7 and 1 are considered less so.

Telephone numbers, vehicle licence plates and addresses which contain these numbers (particularly 888) are very popular and often cost more.

4 in Chinese sounds like the word for death, which is why it is so unpopular. 7 can be translated as "gone" which also has negative connotations, and 1 can mean lonely, for obvious reasons.

888

888 is a very lucky number. Revered by the Chinese as an especially auspicious total, it is in great demand for car numberplates, telephone numbers and even birthdays of children. To the right is the Chines character for "eight".

The reason why 888 is such a lucky number? Well, 8 is considered lucky because it sounds similar to the word for "prosperous" in Cantonese ("fa"). In Chinese, numbers are either "yin" (with more feminine qualities) or "yang" with more masculine qualities. Odd numbers are yang (1,3,5,7,9) and even numbers are yin (2,4,6,8).

The number 8 is the "most yin" of the yin numbers, and represents a change from low to high or poorer to richer.

Three digit numbers sound similar in Chinese to "business will easily prosper", so 888 is doubly lucky!
